Toronto, ON – December 3, 2012- Outside Looking In (OLI) and Scotiabank signed a 3-year, $75,000 agreement in support of the Future Leaders Program, an intensive mentoring and employment opportunities initiative that was piloted with unprecedented success last year.
|“Scotiabank has long focused on the advancement and education of Aboriginal youth. We are excited to participate in the OLI Future Leaders Program as it provides Aboriginal youth with the confidence, discipline and life skills necessary to achieve success in secondary and post secondary education,” says Lee Walker, National Director, Aboriginal Financial Services.
“We are so honoured and grateful for the level of commitment that Scotiabank is providing to this great new initiative that we began last year,” says Founder and CEO, Tracee Smith.”The pilot we ran illustrated to everyone about how important a mentor is to our youth, and continuing to have conversations with them regarding their future plans and the steps they need to take to get there.”
OLI has now worked with some of our First Nations communities for up to five years and there is an increasing number of youth who are approaching high school graduation. This has presented an opportunity to assist our high school graduates and future graduates in grades ten and up, with exploring goals and dreams for their future, to ensure that they know what steps they must take to further their education, employment, training, and life pursuits.
OLI Future Leaders was developed in an effort to best support these youth as they begin to consider their next steps upon graduation. The program matches OLI youth who have previously participated in the program, have graduated or are approaching graduation, with a mentor. Together, the mentor and youth develop a supportive and motivational relationship to encourage youth to see beyond their borders and explore opportunities available to them. The Future Leaders group of mentors and mentees come together twice a year with the highlight being the mentors cheering on their mentee in the OLI Annual event on June 5, 2013.
