Announcing 2014 Future Leaders and Mentors
December 16, 2013
For OLI youth who choose to reach above and beyond the regular program to hone their leadership skills and attain an enriched level of personal achievement, the OLI Future Leaders program matches youth, who have previously participated in our program and have already graduated or are approaching graduation, with a mentor. Together, the mentor and youth develop a supportive and motivational relationship to encourage youth to see beyond their borders and explore opportunities.
This year, eight Future Leaders candidates successfully completed the application process. They are:
Alex Quill, Kurri Quill from Pikangikum First Nation; Brett Pangowish from Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve; Freeborn Fiddler from Sandy Lake First Nation; Lance Geyshick, Brody Allen, and Tye Jourdain from Lac La Croix First Nation – 4 high school graduates; 4 high school students; 4 First Nations represented; one guest appearance by a former OLI youth. Stay tuned for more details.
OLI would like to introduce our mentors for 2014:
Gloria Harris, Selena Perrin, Trina Whiteye, Tyler Pennock, Sean McDermott, Kevin Lindner, Aaron Hohn, and Gilbert “Gitchie” Cheechoo – inspiring individuals who have accepted the challenge and honour of teaching youth by sharing their life experiences.
This year’s Future Leaders will have the amazing opportunity to perform in the closing number, choreographed by Tracee Smith, with other Indigenous dancers at the 21st annual Indspire Awards gala night on Friday March 21, 2014 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. OLI Future Leaders will also be highlighted on stage at Outside Looking In’s 7th annual event, May 14th at the Winter Garden Theatre in downtown Toronto. We invite you to purchase tickets to attend the VIP reception prior to the performance where you will have a chance to meet the Future Leaders and their mentors.
